1 hour before I purchased a flight ticket for my son Harry to come home, from America,

for Christmas 2012 in New Zealand, my very generous mother,

decided the entire family are going with her on her last overseas trip abroad.

Brother Craig chose India; his "spiritual home".

There is no place I want to go to less,

but if I want to see my sons Luke and Harry at Christmas,

I have to go.

This blog will tell the tale ...from start to finish.

Will I love India or hate it?

Tell it like it is Sean Paul Kelley…

Leaving India http://agonist.org/

I had to leave India. I was at the breaking point. I just couldn't stand the place any longer. If all India could be like Kerala then it would be a truly wonderful place to travel in, but it's not. And it isn't.

Two months in India and I can only say that I really only had 'fun' when I was in Kerala. The rest of India--mind you, this is my third trip--was a trial. A trial of patience, endurance, intestinal fortitude (or lack thereof), sheer olfactory horror and hardly any eye-candy in the way of sites as a reward. The gopurams of Tamil Nadu were interesting. Kerala was nice. Mysore was pleasant but from there north nothing measured up, nothing was rewarding enough to endure all the frustrations and odors and filth and sheer human misery I experienced, smelled and witnessed.

Bijapur? A let down. Ellora and Ajanta? Interesting, but hardly worth the effort. Ahmedabad? Filthy. Rajasthan? All I did was puke. Delhi? Let's just not go there.

And what of the crown jewel--the Taj Mahal? It was an endless gauntlet from the train station to the Taj. I felt like a offensive tackle blocking defensive linemen. Just awful. I decided on the train back that it was time to leave India--and soon. Sean Paul Kelley March 25, 2009 - 10:46am
